Alternative Medicine or CAM
The concept of ‘alternative medicine’ is a misnomer at best and confusing at worst. The term, ‘Alternative Medicine,’ implies that Traditional Western Medicine a.k.a Conventional Medicine is the preferred choice for medical care, but there are alternatives to consider.
The concept of combining Conventional and Alternative Medicine (CAM) adds to the confusion. CAM is a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine. CAM combines both conventional and holistic medicine with the hope that it creates hybrid results. Conventional medicine is medicine as practiced by M.D. (medical doctor) or D.O. (doctor of osteopathy) degrees and by their allied health professionals, such as physical therapists, psychologists, and registered nurses.
Holistic/Metaphysical health care focuses on all aspects of human existence-mind, body and spirit. All physical illness is created by emotional distress/dis-ease-it is a cry for help. These negative mental patterns, if left unchecked eventually result in physical dysfunctions. For example-cancer is created from deep hurt; Long standing resentment. A deep secret or grief eating away at the self-Carrying hatreds and/or a belief of “What is the use.” The location of the cancer also has significance. Such as vaginal cancer is usually the result of physical and sexual abuse. The victim perceives themselves as bad, not good enough, because surely if they were a good child, their parent would not physically or sexually harm him/her. Once the negative thinking pattern from this experience is identified; the emotional wounds healed and replaced with a new habitual positive pattern, the physical dysfunction is no longer needed and therefore the body returns to a state of balance and harmony.
Conventional medicine a.k.a. Western Medicine perceives the human body as a battleground on which wars are waged against invaders (viruses, bacterial infections and tumors). Beginning with the Victorian era, Western society has become addicted to quick fixes and results with no effort. Western Medicine has in some instances provided this result. When Western Medicine doesn’t produce a ‘quick fix’ result the answer is: “Sorry, it couldn’t be helped-the surgery was a success, the patient died.” It is interesting to note the AMA reports a dismal success rate-approximately 250,000 people die each year due to misdiagnosis and/or the treatment does little or nothing to improve the person’s health. In other words these people didn’t die due to an illness they died due to the wrong treatment.
Western Medicine’s theory and doctrines fail to recognize that diseases are not separate from the person. In fact every disease can be more accurately called an expression of the patient’s lifestyle, beliefs, and energies. Cancer is not a tumor, for example: it is a systemic disorder that can only truly be cured by helping to support the body, not by attacking it with chemical bombs or knives. The tumor is merely one physical expression of the systemic disorder, and simply removing the tumor does nothing to cure the disease. The body is designed to heal itself-given it has the proper care-nutrition, herbal supplements, spiritual and emotional well-being.
Traditional psychotherapy/psychoanalysis fails to address the all-important relationship to one’s true spiritual nature–relying solely on developing better coping strategies. Traditional spiritual practice often bypasses -and thus fails to transform – the psychological conditional patterns and unconscious beliefs that arise from our personal histories and adaptations.
Both, in general, neglect the fact that we feel, sense, and experience global political mass consciousness, as well as our individual consciousness. A Mind, Body, Spirit approach addresses all three, therefore opening the door to true balance and healing.
Well-being comes from the understanding of the Self, the family, the local community in which we live, and the global community of which we are a part. We are each one heart of the Whole; each heart here to express its unique piece of the Whole. Knowing Self creates a sense of “I as a piece of this Whole,” different and one at the same time-knowing how to have fun, and knowing how to consciously create success. Good health is the aliveness you create-aliveness with love, trust, expectancy and enthusiasm-with which you live your life and explore your reality.
